XFire in talks with Nintendo over Wii?

Submitted by on March 31, 2007 – 10:15 amOne Comment

hop-st.pngIn-game messaging and tracking middleware solution XFire is believed to be talking to Nintendo about coming to the Wii. This theory comes from two well-timed words: “stay tuned.”

Are the 360 and Wii closed off to you?

Integration with the 360 will clearly be more difficult than with other console partners.

You previously commented that you were “in talks with one other console maker”, but haven’t revealed who this is. Is it safe to assume that you were talking about Nintendo, and what has become of this discussion?

Stay tuned!

Where do you see console online services going in the future?

Clearly, console gamers are very interested in:

- Knowing what games their console buddies are playing
- Joining their console buddies in online games
- Communicating (via text or voice chat) with their console buddies
- Downloading new content, like game trailers, game expansion packs, game mods, etc.
- Tracking their online game play stats and accessing these stats from any website

This seems like a pretty straightforward choice for both parties. Nintendo would love to offer these options to gamers without having to actual implement it themselves, seeing as how they’ve been… let’s say… slow to take up robust online functionality in gaming. These features would be a huge step in the right direction for online gaming for the Wii, excising a chunk of the “functionality gap” between their free service (which has not yet launched for the Wii, by the way) and Microsoft’s standard-setting Live.

Sony is mentioned in the preface of the interview in the context of saying that XFire’s talks with Sony have not (yet) turned productive, and that his comment of “one other console maker” was while talking about Sony, and this is why this seems to be referring to Nintendo. The wording seems to isolate the two statements though, so it’s not clear if by “other console maker” they actually are talking about Sony.

“Last year the company hit headlines after misinterpretation of comments by Sony regarding Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom incorrectly gave the impression that Xfire would be the default service used for all PlayStation 3 titles. While this turned out not to be true, the company hints that there may be more dealings with Sony in the future, as well as suggesting toward the end of last year that it was ‚Äúin talks with one other console maker‚Äù.”

I’ll cross all my toes and fingers, so you’re going to want to keep clear while I’m walking around for the next couple days. I’m likely to fall down and take you with me.

I hope XFire gets some traction with Sony and Nintendo. Would be nice to see some form of online community for Nintendo.
