Wii ad upsets UK viewers

redsteelwii.jpgThink Rockstar games are the only video games people get upset about these days? Nope. One ad run in the UK shows people of various ages playing the Wii, and at one point a man is shown playing Red Steel. The text “16+” appeared on the screen, and as the man slashed at his opponent, the game character fell to the floor holding his head.

Seven complainants found the “depiction of violence in the ad offensive and disturbing”. One viewer stated that it was reminiscent of recent videos released by hostage-takers in Iraq.

An additional four complainants believed that the ad glorified violence and the use of weapons, and could encourage children to emulate such actions.

Six complainants challenged the scheduling restrictions and said that the ad should not be shown when children were watching TV.

The Advertising Standards Authority threw out the complaints, saying that the ad was meant to show the wide range of games available for the Wii for all ages, and that the Red Steel footage was not graphically violent.

    Pathetic.
You get loads of old people over here in the UK who have nothing better to do than complain.

The FCC should take note of the Advertising Standards Authority. Actually, reviewing the commercial is a good idea instead of just giving into complaints.
