What’s So Great About World of Warcraft?
World of Warcraft is the undisputed king of the MMO world today, but why is it so important? What got it where it is today? We’ve seen spotty conversations all over the web about just what makes the game great, but Elysium over at GamersWithJobs has written Lessons of Success to pull it all together.
I’ve been shocked by how well the Burning Crusade expansion launched. I was one of the naysayers who told a friend of mine who still plays it to plan for some alternate gaming activities during the first few weeks, but I was wrong. Not only did the server launch go well, it did so under crushing volumes of players. What kinds of volumes? Well, consider what sales were like for the game:
The Burning Crusade sold more copies in 24 hours than any PC game had ever sold in entire month.
The game itself has been kind of a black sheep in their podcast, being called The Game Which Shall Not Be Named and other humorous euphemisms when it does come up simply because it’s hard not to talk about just that game. In the most recent Conference Call #21 a couple of listener emails sparked conversations that touched on one or two of the issues you see in the article.
In general the article digs deeper and really shines a bright light on what makes the game a landmark achievement. The user comments after the main story are by and large excellent as well, giving a personal spin on why some of the members of the site play, are addicted to, never played, or walked away from the runaway mega-success in the PC gaming space.
With so many playing, I’m starting to think that the question to PC gamers everywhere isn’t going to be “Have you tried World of Warcraft?”. It is going to be “Why aren’t you playing World of Warcraft?” accompanied by a look of suspicion.
