What gives you console envy?

Submitted by on March 18, 2007 – 8:15 pm9 Comments

umds.pngWe’ve got five platforms now that matter out there. Five systems that are worth owning. I’m not counting Windows and Macintosh into the equation, because just about everyone has at least one of those, particularly if you’re reading this, but let’s lay it out here.

Whether you want to admit it or not, there is at least one game on every platform that you don’t own that makes you wish you had that system, even if you’d throw it out a window after you finished with the game. So what would be your most wanted games on each platform you don’t own? Click through for mine.

Xbox 360

While I don’t own an Xbox 360, the library of impressive titles is way too much to ignore. It’s only money and time that keeps me from buying one, and that’s saying a lot with how I have historically looked at Microsoft. I have little to no interest in most FPS titles, so the most likely candidates would be games I would try, things like Gears of War and the Halo titles. No, for me, the big deal on 360 would probably be Blue Dragon, Dead Rising, or perhaps even Crackdown, which looks really, really cool.

PlayStation 3

PlayStation 3 is still a weak platform in my opinion, and it’s more than the price tag keeping me from picking one up. My perspective on all things Sony (including their home electronics outside the PlayStation brand) is a bit like James’ perspective on all things Nintendo: there’s a knee-jerk reaction to hate, regardless of quality. But as much as I grit my teeth, I wanted to play God of War and Shadow of the Colossus last generation, and more than anything else, even Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, I wanted Okami. This generation is a tougher call right now. Motorstorm impresses me, even though I’m disappointed at buying into the E3 2005 showing (I actually said “This is precisely the most amazing thing I have ever seen from a video game”) but I haven’t seen anything else interesting on the platform.

PlayStation Portable

This one’s a bit easier for me than the other two, even. Mega Man Powered Up is great, I’ve actually played that one briefly. I’m interested in Lumines of course, which I’ve also tried. I’d also like to take LocoRoco and Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth for a spin. And of course, above all else, Dracula X Chronicles which is expected this fall. That’s the kind of thing that sells me a system, yo. Beyond that, I’ve heard some great things from James that make me want to play Tekken Dark Resurrection and Wipeout Pure.

Let’s hear it readers, what gives you console envy?

Envy, hmm. Unfortunately there isn’t anything I want to play on the PS3 and Wii. If there was something that interests me on the Wii, for $249 I’d own one already.

    I’ve got a a PSP, 360 and DS so I don’t miss a thing. :-D

I think my first case of this-gen console envy will happen if Katamari gets remade for the PS3, 360, and Wii, none of which I own. My PSP and DS are the only “current” systems I have, although I think I have plenty more PS2 games.

This is a great topic to discuss.
Motorstorm interests me in the PS3 but I’m not dying to play it yet. Guitar Hero II on the PS2 almost made me cave in and buy one but luckily I’ll have it on the 360 in several weeks.
Zelda on the Wii is something I’d love to try as well.

  • Subnet6

I’d never buy a PS3 for these current games, but I would like to get some more time with Motor Storm. I hear it’s a lot better since the in store demos which were disappointing but looked great. I was really in a panic when assassins creed was still exclusive because that game looks fantastic and I knew I would not own a PS3 any time soon. Valkyrie Profile also looks really interesting but not much else on the PSP interests me.

Little Big Planet, but that’s about it. Not worth spending over 600 bucks though. Not even close.

    360:
    Crackdown
    Gears of War
    Burnout 4/Revenge

    Wii:
    Rayman Raving Rabbids
    Zelda: Twilight Princess, of course.

    DS:
    Animal Crossing Wild World

God Of War is the only title i really want to play on the ps2 i have a 360 and have all the games that i want for it Gears of war, Lost Planet, Crackdown there is really nothing i wanted to play on the ps3 but just like Subnet6 i was worred when i heard that assasins creed was an exclusive to ps3. On the wii i would like to play zelda twilight. For the psp i would love to play rachet and clank but its not enought for me to buy the system. And as for the DS this is gona sound childish but i kind wana play the the new pokemon game for it. thats about all the console envy i have.

For me, I’m split amongst all three consoles:

    360 -
    - Guitar Hero 2 w/ downloadable content. Tantalizing by itself, but “peripheral” attachment for the guitar as well? Oh my!
    - Dead Rising. Singlehandedly sold me on the console. I almost bought it of my friend the same day I played that game, and probably would have had he owned the game and not rented it.
    - Gears of War. Once again, tasty gameplay. Stories from friends, videos on TV, online, etc. all of it just keeps adding to the salivating.

    PS3
    - Mmmm.. Blu-Ray. My TV just doesn’t get enough HD content. (not 1080p, but 720p or 1080i [up-convert doesn't count]).
    - Mmmm… HDMI. Once again, another unused port to which my TV cries at night about: “Mike, why haven’t you used me?”.
    - LittleBigPlanet… So pretty.. Sounds so good.
    - Resistance: another that looks good, and I hear good stories from people on.

    Wii
    - I love party games, so a LOT of the titles on it are appealling.
    - Zelda: yet another reason. I love Zelda, and have only heard good/great things about it.

Why haven’t I purchased any of them yet?

    1) Working on my new gaming room/area.
    2) I’m still waiting to see how the PS3/360 battle turns out. No, I’m not worried about the Wii, and I don’t include it in that list because it broadsides BOTH consoles.

I will end up with a Wii, and atleast, one of the others, but time will tell when said purchases occur.

  • Sammael

    DS
    trauma center
    all of the castlevanias
I won’t buy anther handheld though due to
    1) arthritic hands. at my young age, my hands kill me from playing any handheld for any more than 15 minutes.
    2) Overpriced titles. protable titles are a bit too much for my taste on launch, and I usually hate to wait for something to hit bargain bin.
    3) I drive everywhere. If I was going to be stuck on a train daily, I would buy one. But that isn;t the case for me.

    PSP – Locoroco and MGSPO.
Locoroco will be coming to PS3 from what I’m hearing, so I’ll wait.

Wii – I had my fun waving my arms all willy-nilly for a few weeks, and now that my Wii is gone, I have successfully talked myself out of burning the cash on one. I would like to finish Raving Rabbids and Elebits at some point, but my main interest is on the virtual console games.

    LONG LIVE NEC!!!
