Twilight Princess is amazing. The music sucks.

tomato.pngImagine how stunned I was to find out how… well, blah the music is in Twilight Princess. I’m a big fan of the franchise and it’s had a lot of great music, but I have to admit I was pretty annoyed when it turned out all the music is MIDI. We were told some of the music at least would be orchestral and would sound really good, but instead we got something actually inferior to the music in Wind Waker. Which isn’t to say there isn’t a large range there under Wind Waker, I just especially liked the music in that game.

Nothing’s memorable in Twilight Princess’ music. The only thing that comes to mind is the attract mode theme, and all that amounts to is an arrangement of the original Zelda title theme done with electronic vocals. It’s only memorable because when I turn the game on and step out of the room for a minute it’s playing. It sounds awful when compared to the title theme from Wind Waker, which really suited the game well. I can’t think of any explanation for this. It’s jarring when the rest of the game is so well put together, and it really hurts the ambiance of the game. Anybody else have this experience with Twilight Princess?

I loved the music in Malo’s shop. The new one in Castle Town. That was cool. Other than that, yeah nothing memorable. The music for running around out in the world was annoying. It had too much bass and I always had to turn my sub speaker down. Plus, that tune played so much (since you spend tons of time running through prairies) that my girlfriend couldn’t stand it anymore and she literally screams when she hears that song. She hates it. I expected more than what I got from the game. I still liked Windwaker better. I miss magic too.

I think Nintendo panicked a bit when Wind Waker sold relatively poorly, and went back and specifically tried to make something like Ocarina of Time.

And OoT didn’t just have MIDI music, it had -dynamic- music. That requires a hell of a lot more memory to do with recorded audio (since any of several clips could play next). For the record, I liked Twilight Princess’ dynamic overworld theme, but I do like Wind Waker’s music a bit better.

Yea, I really didn't like the music. The only thing slightly memorable was “Midna's Lament” and that was too short of a song just looped over and over.

Furthermore, the transition from open field to combat music is so cut and jumpy, little transition.
