The Challenges Of Crush

Kuju LogoCrush originally caught my eye when it was announced a month or so ago, and Joystiq recently posted about a developer conference where the philosophies and challenges associated with such an unusual game design were discussed. It’s good stuff, but it’s hard to understand just how good until you see the game in motion. Fortunately, 1Up has given us just the thing with the Insomnia video of gameplay, among others.

The challenges discussed by the developers included things that needed to be watched for and ironed out during testing. This included the shortcut challenge, where smart players will simply shift the level around to quickly leapfrog the level challenges, and disorientation, which they combated by ensuring landmarks stay visible in the level.

What do I like most about the video?  The style and sound effects work really nicely together when navigating, and the snap of his foot when he stamps to shift the world in and out of 2D is really great.  It all ties together nicely, keeping me interested in learning more about the final game.
