Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection PS3 Impressions
The news broke that Namco Bandai was porting their latest arcade button-masher, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, to the Playstation 3 way back in December ’06. Now available via download in the US for $19.99, Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection is definitely a, “You get what you pay for” scenario. You’re paying half-price for half of the game.
Unfortunately, it’s not necessarily the better half.
36 fighters round out Dark Resurrection’s arsenal, all of which are unlocked and made available to you from the beginning here. This is the same story for the Japanese and UK versions of Dark Resurrection and I find it a little unfortunate. Some of the joy of playing through a fighting game with multiple characters is unlocking additional characters. That joy, if that matters to you, is gone.
The truly glaring omission in Tekken 5: DR for the PS3 is the Tekken Dojo. Since it’s debut on the PSP version of Tekken DR, the Tekken Dojo is definitely the best game mode I’ve ever played. The tournament style gamplay along with the ability to upload my ghost for a chance to land a spot in the worldwide dojo is incredibly addictive. Also, the inability to download ghost packs to spice up the AI variety is a really glaring omission.
If you have some local friends to play against, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection will definitely satisfy. Unfortunately as a single player game, it’s hard for me to recommend it to anyone other than the hardcore Tekken fan.
