Soft news remains obsessed with Nintendo Wii.

signal-on-air.pngThis morning I flipped on the TV for my toddler so she could look at your backyard friends. The cable company’s news channel was tuned in, because it keeps the dog from peeing on the floor when we go out, and all we did last night was play video games on the TV after we got home.

They were talking about the Wii.

The Wii fitness connection has really clicked with soft news, and they’re still talking about it. The spot was kind of unnerving, it was like one of those commercials that tries to look like news, despite the presence of a Nintendo rep saying Nintendo does not make any claims of health benefits from using the Wii and the station’s local “expert” saying that video games that make you move are better than those that don’t, but aren’t as good as “real exercise.”

I found myself thinking about it for a while and what’s really sticking in me is how Nintendo has hit the nail right on the head with this system. They talked a lot about selling to non-gamers, and I had to try to believe it, but the Wii keeps popping up on the local news for no reason at all, and keeps selling out in stores. I haven’t seen a Wii commercial since Christmas. Crazy stuff.
