Seems that the second announcement from Microsoft is not the Halo 3 Beta that everyone was expecting, but a new mobile browser for the Windows Mobile platform. The new browser is called Deepfish and is currently in an early pre-beta state.

According to the Deepfish site, the browser is suppose to give mobile users a desktop browsing experience along with speed optimizations. The browser also allows for simple form input, intuitive zoom and address bar navigation. The Microsoft run blog site Channel 10, has a video along with more notes about the exclusive launch.

The browser is currently available as a tech download for Pocket PC and Smartphones, although it is a limited beta and the downloads will be removed when they reach their target download audience.

We will keep a lookout at the Channel 10 site along with Major Nelson and other Microsoft sites just to make sure that this was the only major announcements as it seems to me that this can’t be the true announcement, considering all the hype that was built up the last two days.

I’ve been following the handheld PDA/smartphone space for a long time, and there are three big problems with Windows Mobile. Those are:

    1. Pocket Office is the worst program for taking Office apps on the go.

    2. Pocket IE is almost the worst mobile browser.

    3. Windows Mobile itself has a horrible memory and multitasking model. Yes its multitasking and software potential is greater than that of the Palm OS 5, but when any app can cause the whole system to grind to a halt and crash it out by overrunning its memory you have a weak, last-gen OS at work.

Addressing #2 is good for Microsoft, since alternative browsers have started to show up, but with the core OS and MS Office support so bad, I can’t recommend one for business users.
