PS3 in Italy Break Street Date
Retailers in Italy seem to have decided that they do not need to follow the guidelines set by Sony, as they broke the street date for the PS3 in Europe. Representatives of Sony have stated that they are very upset with the retailers that have broken ranks and started selling early.
Many specialty retailers are also upset due to not having any units yet to sell early. They feel that they will be undercut by the competition that has received units early. A rep from Gamestop in Italy said that while they have never broken a street date, the competition may force their hand to do so.
This is the first time I have heard of a release of something this large having its release date broken. I know Half Life 2 hit a day early, but while big, does not compare to the PS3 in regards to the hype. I wonder if these retailers will be punished by Sony in the way ot cut shipments or loss of advertising assistance.
Thanks to GamesIndustry.biz for the heads up and image.
