PS3 gets Video Chat, Tekken 5 DR Hits US

Tekken5DR and Video ChatGamaSutra reports that the North American version of Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection for the PS3 is now available on the PlayStation Store for $19.99, along with a new 1.54 firmware update that includes video chat. Video chat?!

Yep, video chat. It’s apparently compatible with any webcam that supports the USB standard for video. That means just about any run of the mill webcam should work with it, folks. I hope to get a hands-on look at this new feature soon, but I’d just like to point out that supporting open standards in hardware is really a nice thing to do for your users. Bluetooth headsets, the PS2 USB headsets, USB storage devices, SD/CF/MS flash cards, and now USB cameras are all compatible with the PS3, and not all of these things need to have been made by Sony. I almost forgot to mention the feature where you’ll be able to resize the video to fit your screen.

Sounds like they’re all ready for Skype integration, doesn’t it? Not to mention a next-gen EyeToy and corresponding game support for it.

Video Chat?!?! Wow! I’m glad they were the first ones to think of this! Oh WAIT! they weren’t. What a fucking surprise. More stolen shit from Sony.

Kyle: Yeah, the 360 had video chat first and it’s also in-game video chat but the 360 had a year head start.

Does 360 video chat work with any webcam or just the 360 Vision cam from Microsoft?

Just the 360 Cam, which I prefer. Nothing like the trial and error of hoping your USB Web Cam will actually work.

It’s pretty cheap, thirty bucks and it comes with UNO. :-D
