Plumbers and hedgehogs living in harmony a bittersweet affair.
Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies. Rivers and seas boiling. Forty years of darkness. Earthquakes, volcanoes, the dead rising from the grave. Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!
For a guy who was at ground zero in the SNES vs Genesis affair, seeing the announcement that Mario and Sonic would be sharing a video game is nothing short of entertaining. While I never really had any kind of factional alignment in the matter, thinking that both Super Mario World and Sonic the Hedgehog were great games, much was made of the idea of “taking sides” in the advertising Sega was producing, and a lot of people bought into it.
Of course, Sonic’s not the anti-hero he was seen as back then, and Mario’s far more popular and successful… not to mention the fact that the Mario games are much better on average. And that’s where the bittersweet thing comes in. Sonic appearing in a game with Mario right now just does not have the impact that it would have last generation, particularly if this game had appeared right when the Dreamcast fell.
All I can really say about it at this point is I hope the games turn out well.
