PlayStation Brand Carried PS3 Through January
DubiousQuality posted about the January NPD console sales numbers a little while back, noting what looks like a coincidence of surprisingly strong sales numbers for the PS3 and unusually weak ones for the Xbox 360. The Wii continued to rampage through retail, leading the pack. Here’s what the numbers looked like:
Wii: 436k
360: 294k
PS3: 244k
Many of us have a soft spot for Nintendo, but with February done I’m curious about whether or not their momentum is going to slow up a bit. The Thanksgiving and Christmas burst of sales and the knock-on effect of having everyone in those families trying out the new system and having their “I want one” moment kick in might be overwith, so soon it’ll be up to the individual games to carry the system. Then again, there might be a lot of gamers who didn’t get a next-gen system yet who decided that the Wii was just cool and hip enough to justify the excuse of spending less money on it than a 360. After that, good luck convincing a significant other that you need a second new console in your living room.
Conversely I’d be surprised if the PS3 kept those numbers going. What notable titles showed up on the system in January? I couldn’t tell you.
Bill Harris also shines a light on the Xbox 360 and asks why it isn’t selling more strongly given the machine’s library. The good news for them, as you might guess, is that Microsoft is in the catbird seat when it comes to cutting prices on their year-plus-old system. The Wii is selling so well that Nintendo probably doesn’t even have a price cut plan anywhere in their business portfolio.
