Nintendo.com: Super Mario Galaxy supports 1-2 players.

space-bannerSM.pngBack in the olden days of 2005, I pointed out an article at the elder incarnation of N-Europe that quoted Shigeru Miyamoto in an interview as saying the game (which we were just referring to as Mario 128 at the time) would involve a “sidekick” of some kind for Mario:

“The new Mario game will surprise many people. Give us the benefit of the doubt. I think we’ll present you with a new way to have fun. There’s even a new character by his side.

Without any corroboration recently, I would have assumed they were talking about the star which is driven by the pointer while you play the game, but it looks like there may be something more to the story.

Jorge Ba-oh over at Cubed3 (anyone else notice how much dirt Cubed3′s been scooping lately? Nice work!) is pointing out that Nintendo’s official site for Super Mario Galaxy claims the game supports 1-2 players. Could this unspecified “new character” be making an appearance?

Read on for a screenshot.

How many Mario games don’t support more than 1 player?

Well, there are a lot of Mario games. But since the advent of 3D in the main platformer franchise at least, they’ve all been single player. This would be the first multiplayer console Mario since Super Mario World.
