Microsoft Buying Take 2? [Update 1]

Submitted by on March 21, 2007 – 12:18 pm4 Comments

Take2-ms.jpgAccording to Vgcharts, Take 2 has postponed its stockholder meeting in order to explore other options that might help the struggling company’s fall from grace. The rumor has it that Microsoft has put in a bid to buy the publisher/developer. Take 2 has been in decay due to multiple lawsuits and internal issues, a buyout definitely sounds like something that could easily happen. As of yet there has been no word from Microsoft, but if this is gonna happen expect it to happen soon as Take 2 is in dire need of a lifeboat.

Microsoft definitely needs to broaden its lineup of first party games if they are going to complete with all of Sony’s forthcoming exclusives, and acquiring Take 2 will obviously bolster their lineup quite a bit. I just wonder if Sony is going to sit back and do nothing as their once vaunted game library gets smaller and smaller, and will we see GTA4 on the PS3?

Let us know what you think in our comments section.

UPDATE: Shane Kim has confirmed to CNN that Microsoft has no plans to buy Take 2 Interactive. They state that “We could never launch an acquisition bid at a third party publisher.” There are still rumblings that Take 2 could sell off certain franchises or developers under their control, but as of now it looks like Microsoft will not get the whole company.

Are T2 and RockStar linked aside from publisher-developer? I mean, if MS gets Take Two, does that mean they get RockStar and all its properties?

I think that Take 2 owns Rockstar, they dont own all the devs that they publish games for however. Games like Bioshock and others would not chnage.

I feel M$ has really made an effor over the last few years to beef up its mainstay in the gaming world, and they’ve done a decent job so far.

Microsoft is famous for stripping competing companies of their best talent by luring them away with big money in every other software sector. They gutted Borland’s brain trust and used their engineers to build the .NET technologies.

It’s far cheaper to poach the best and the brightest from a company than buy it outright. Look for them to do the same with developers within Take 2 and others, but it will probably go unnoticed until someone major is poached from the company.
