Live Arcade Wednesday 3/14/07: TMNT 1989

Submitted by on March 14, 2007 – 9:20 pm3 Comments

TMNT_Live_Arcade.JPGAh 1989, H. W. Bush succeeded Reagan as President, Hulk Hogan defeated Randy Savage in Wrestlemania V and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles invaded American arcades. Fast forward to 2007, Bush is the President, Hogan is collecting social security and the Turtles are finally back in the prime time.

Well, just as both my other examples continue to disappoint, TMNT 1989 for the Xbox Live Arcade is far from prime time. I was a huge fan of this game in upright form but this one lost direction on it’s way to the 360′s Live Arcade. While it’s only 400 points ($5 US), that’s no excuse for the terrible audio quality included here. It wouldn’t have taken much to toss in some updated or remastered audio or possibly just kick the treble down a bit. What you get here is a tinny mess.

I’d buy this game if the audio wasn’t so painful to listen to. The core of the game is a great side-scrolling beat’em up so it’s a damn shame that Konami didn’t spend a little time updating it as it deserves. Video proof is coming but until then, full game specs inside.

Everyone’s favorite totally tubular turtles bring their radical ninja skills to Xbox Live Arcade. The 1989 arcade classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is true to the original arcade classic.

Choose from one of four Ninja Turtles—Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, or Raphael—and master their unique ninja weapons and abilities. Play through the original seven levels alone, or with up to three others cooperatively via Xbox Live.

* Classic gameplay: Re-live the nostalgia of the original 1989 arcade classic on Xbox 360.
* Different turtles: Choose from one of four Ninja Turtles‚ÄîLeonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello or Raphael‚Äîand master their unique ninja butt-kickin’ abilities.
* Comic book characters: Interact with unforgettable characters, including Splinter, April O’Neal, Baxter Stockman, and Shredder.

Ah I remember the cartoon when it first came out YEARS ago. I was so addicted. I even tried to draw them myself.

The game sounds like it was untouched since it came out. But at least there’s 4 player online Co-Op!

Ahh come on James, listening to the horrible sound is part of the retro fun.

Don’t go blaming Konami for the audio at all, they don’t have the franchise rights to the TMNT line anymore, instead you should try and focus on the Ubisoft team who was behind this XBLA portation. Besides, Konami’s own staff has been busy on getting their own lineup of titles for Live here:

On an off tangent I wished more publishers would do what Konami’s done and list their Xbox Live Arcade and soon Playstation Store titles on their products page.
