Japanese Wii Sales Slide 30%

Down.jpgProbably due to a combination of hardware shortages and a lack of A-list titles, Nintendo Wii sales slid 30% in Japan last week. In the end, the Wii landed in third place behind the DS Lite and PSP with 44,495 units sold. 44,495 units is in comparison to almost 60,000 Wii units sold in Japan the week prior.

This isn’t the first sign of weakening Wii sales in Japan, they’ve been consistently slipping all year. Since the week of January 8th, Nintendo Wii sales are down over 100% and if I go back to the first week in January, it’s over 300%.

The Japanese gaming market is in a very bizarre situation. There simply isn’t anything to play on their top two home-grown consoles. Japanese developers are thanking their lucky stars for the DS and PSP, which have basically extended the previous generation until these next generation jokers can get some games on the shelves.
