Is Nintendo Veddy Veddy Sneaky?

Submitted by on March 28, 2007 – 1:00 am4 Comments

Sneaky.jpgI’m sure you’ve heard the story, Gamestop COO Dan DeMatteo told Next Generation that the Nintendo Wii shortages we’ve seen thus far are “intentional.” His reasoning is that Nintendo, “made their numbers for the year,” and that Nintendo will be shipping oodles of stock starting on April 1st, which is the start of Japan’s fiscal year.

Do I think this is true? There’s no doubt in my mind that it’s true. The main system hardware of the DS and Wii is generally archaic, it should be simple for Nintendo to roll out and meet the demand. People wanted a Wii but not every household in America bought one. They had just enough systems available at launch to outdo the PS3 significantly enough to get people talking and when they hit their necessary numbers they crimped the hose, choking off the supply and successfully creating additional demand.

So is Nintendo very sneaky? No, not really all that sneaky at all. They are a company though and just like the other two, a company exists to make money. Sometimes we too easily forget that simple fact.

Nintendo is the king of making money with its consoles.

Sony sells the console at a loss and last generation was able to make it all back and then some with royalties.

Microsoft’s console division hasn’t yet made a profit, throwing money down a giant hole. What money? Our money, provided by Windows and Office.

I don’t think Nintendo “crimped the hose” at all. I think they targeted a demand of 6 million consoles sold by the end of march and made their manufacturing decisions based on that. You can’t diss a company for shipping exactly what it promised it would ship. As it turns out even their bold claim of 6 million units out by march was a bit shy of actual demand. Holding back units? I doubt it.
They even said a couple of months ago that they were making what they could and that because of dramatic demand beyond their calculations they would begin ramping up production in March and that those units would start hitting in April. These numbers simply confirm this.
