Images from CES 2007

While attanding CES 2007 this year for work, I had the opportunity to detour into the gaming section at Microsoft and Sony’s booths. I was also armed with my trusty White Chocolate cameraphone, so I snapped a few pictures and thought I would share some of my observations. The first picture we have here is of Hellgate for the PC. The developers that were at the show said that the code was pretty much done and that they were now working on balancing the weapons and badguys. The game ran smooth and I was impressed at the environments and the game interface.

hellgate2 (Custom).jpg This is another shot from Hellgate with the character screen showing. The screen was logically laid out and gave you the info you needed without overwhelming you. This game really looks good and is a promising show for the PC.

guitarhero2-1 (Custom).jpgAs most will be able to tell, this is a screen for Guitar Hero 2. What you may not know is that this is playing on the 360. The game is an identical twin to its PS2 counterpart. Of course, achievements and downloadable content will set this apart from other Guitar Hero games. One thing that surprised me is that the controller was a wired controller. I am not sure if that will be the controller that ships with the game, but it was the only controller I saw at the show.

lair1 (Custom).jpg Here is a screen shot from the game Lair for the PS3. The game makes extensive use of the SIXAXIS controller. All of the dragon flight is performed by moving and tilting the controller. It seemed a little unresponsive at times, but the developers said that the demo was still a bit early in the coding stage and that the controls would be tightened up before release. The game reminded me of Eragon (still in theaters at the time, so that may have been why), but it looked really cool and who doesn’t like setting people on fire with a dragon.

GT4-1 (Custom).jpg This is the game that PS3 players were drooling over at the Sony booth. The game looked amazing and I have to admit that I was floored by the graphics. I had put PGR3 at the top when it came to detailed car games, but this may replace it. Controls were rock solid, but the physics were a bit sloppy. It could just be the car or me just getting used to the game, but powerslides and drifts were difficult to pull off with this game. There was no developer available for questioning, but Sony reps were boasting that this was going to be a must have title for the PS3.

Not to make you feel bad, but I have a better display. Dell fpw2405 24″ LCD. It makes PC gaming a truely excellent experience.
