If There’s an Xbox 2, There’ll Be a PSP 2

11-05-06_1119_410.jpgYes. I’m telling you that there will definitely be a sequel to Sony’s love-to-hate handheld, the Playstation Portable. If you read the gaming wires, you’ll see that Sony has confirmed then denied then confirmed again that the console will one day have a follow up handheld hit the shelves. I’m standing on my imaginary soap box now, there will definitely be a new PSP.

It’s startling to see how many bloggers think Sony’s confirmation is at all necessary here. The console has sold millions of units worldwide and is the only moderately successful portable gaming device since Nintendo’s handhelds hit the stage. That alone shows that there’s room for at least two in the handheld gaming race. I’ll even go on the record as saying that Nintendo fans should tip their cap to Sony a little, if it wasn’t for the PSP I’m convinced that the DS would’ve never been pushed to go online at all. If you even call what they have online at all, it even looks almost completely abandoned at this point.

So yes, whether Sony confirms it or not, the PSP is absolutely, positively getting a follow up. I’m not even going out on a limb saying this, they’d simply be no less than insane not to make one. If the Xbox got a sequel, the PSP sure as hell deserves a follow up system.

What kind of redesign is involved, well, I think I’ll save that for another day.

A reworked PSP has been rumoured for months, but this is the first time a Sony executive has gone on record to confirm the company‚Äôs plans. Aside from a reduction in size and weight, Maguire did not suggest any additional changes to the hardware.”Smaller, lighter” iteration on the wayI guess you’re right.
