Review: Dragon Ball Z – Ultimate Tenkaichi (PS3)

October 28, 2011 – 12:44 pm |

I really liked last year’s DBZ game, Dragon Ball Z: Burst Limit 2. It felt like the franchise had finally achieved some serious attention with a game that was both deep and fun.
This year, we …

How to improve the DS & DS Lite

dssettings.jpgWhile I’m sure everyone has his own idea for killer features to add to the DS, this list comes from the Next Gen blog. I definitely think my favorite is the first one:

1. Add internal flash memory for storing demos. I can keep my PSP demos and try them out over and over again… why can’t I bring my DS demos home (from the DS download point at the store) where I have a bit more freedom, and try them out there? (Well, I *can*, I just have to leave the DS on.)

2. Okay, maybe I lied and this one is my favorite – don’t make me reboot just to change the screen brightness (DS Lite) or otherwise mess with settings!

3. Make the interface expandable, like adding channels to the Wii does.

4. A Virtual Console for the DS for demos and Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and even GBA games. I can’t say I entirely agree with this one – a handheld is much easier to break (physically speaking) than a console that sits on a shelf… there would have to be a *really* easy way to transfer your stuff to a new DS. And what if it gets stolen?

5. Well, they call this “integrated Wifi,” but then describe it as a universal friends list. Wifi does need improving – I have a supported router and it still had problems with the DS, so I bought the Nintendo USB Wifi dongle anyways. I’m probably dreaming a bit here, but for me a universal friends list would include the ability to link our DSes and Wiis (if we had both systems) on the network, so that, say, I could get mail on my DS without downloading it from the Wii – just straight from the network. Another great feature would be that, say I add Sally to my friends list… it would add both her Wii and DS (assuming we both have both systems) and we could each see a list of multiplayer games that the other owns. If, say, I had a Wii and a DS and she had only a DS, we’d still add each other the same way and only my multiplayer DS games would be displayed to her.

6. Integrated Pictochat – to be used like the system in Animal Crossing DS is, and like with Xbox Live. And let it be used over Wifi, not just locally.

7. Let people draw and organize more – such as drawing our own avatars, onscreen, for Pictochat, or drawing our own backgrounds or borders. I’m not sure I would use such a feature as I’m not graphically artistic, but I know plenty of people who would.

8. I’m going to quote this one directly from their site:
“Make real, native use of the Game Boy advance slot by offering a system update cartridge that incorporates all of the above features. And maybe also serves as a rumble pak, if there’s room. The advantage over typical “system upgrades”, like the ram expansion for the N64 or the PS2 hard drive, is that this cartridge should have little direct effect on game software; it would simply transform the DS into a more useful and personal tool. Such an update would also weed out the necessity to offer a whole new DS model, further annoying people who felt forced to upgrade to the DS Lite ‚Äì itself only a cosmetic adjustment.”

I don’t know about that last one – I don’t want to lose all my “upgraded features” if I have to take the upgrade cart out to play a GBA game, so it would have to have memory to hold any customizations I’d made (if number 7 happened).

Best improvement to the DS? Go buy a slot 1 flash card. R4, M3 simply, etc. Then you have a lot of options and can turn the DS into a PDA, play MP3s, etc.
