Final Fantasy XI On the PS3?
Back in mid-December the 1.31 firmware upgrade for the PlayStation 3 slipped by and I didn’t really notice. While milling around the rather emaciated online FAQ system for the PSP and PS3 at Sony’s site I tripped over an entry that describes how to install Final Fantasy XI on the PS3. This was quite a surprise, and quick search found a guess about it being supported in 1.31 via Japanese release notes on Joystiq. A little more digging found these nicer-looking release notes.
A friend of mine purchased a PS3 shortly after launch and when I got my first look at it I was shocked when I saw it could play PS2 online titles as well. He happily demonstrated Champions of Norrath: Return To Arms online for me, including keyboard and headset support. At the time that I first heard that the PS3 would have backwards compatibility with the PS2, I completely dismissed the idea that games that used the brutally abandoned HDD would get any kind of support on the PS3. Seeing this happen for FFXI is impressive, even though I stopped playing it long ago.
It also magnifies the feeling of utter confusion as to why Sony would want to cut backwards compatibility support from the system starting with its European launch.
