Featured Link: Zelda Universe
There is no shortage of worthless official websites for well-established gaming franchises. Even the better designed sites have a tendency to disappoint with their tilt toward style over substance. A notable exception would have to be the official Legend of Zelda website, which is called Zelda Universe. Not only is it a beautiful and easy-to-navigate site (the latter of course being far more important than the former), but there is an absolute ton of content there. A fan of the series could spend a long time poking around the site and seeing all there is to see.
My favorite feature on the site is the collection of walkthroughs. There is a walkthrough for each game in the series (minus the CD-i ones of course) that will take you straight to every critical item, every key and boss, in very concise language. Anyone who’s been stuck in a Zelda game can appreciate that. Personally, I’m stuck partway through Oracle of Seasons and when I’m not forehead-deep in the newest Zelda on Wii, I’ll be heading back to that one. After that, it’s back to Majora’s Mask, a game whose click point is still far in my future I fear.
Also on the site is The Great Hyrule Encyclopedia, which is a collection of short entries on an assortment of enemies, items, people and more in the Zelda games. It’s a great time waster that’s full of surprises, but unfortunately is lacking images for the entries. And speaking of images, some of the art on the site is clearly sampled from a low-quality source. In particular, the main page image for the original Legend of Zelda looks like a blurry scan from the front of the box. I’m surprised they couldn’t get some better source art from Nintendo.
