EA Montreal bringing Wii its first rhythm game.
Gamespot has a first look at Boogie, a new rhythm game, an original IP no less, from EA Montreal (of SSX Blur fame) coming exclusively to Wii. But, rather than using a dance mat, you just use the regular Wii Remote-Nunchuk combo control. Here’s how it works:
“Getting your character to cut a rug is surprisingly simple. The Nunchuk controls your character’s lower body movement, so moving it to the left will cause your character to move his or her hips to the left; if you move it in a circular motion, your character’s hips will rotate. The Wii Remote is used to control the upper body. A pair of eyes appears onscreen where your remote is pointing, and your character’s eyes follow the remote around as it moves, with your character’s upper body following suit. This sounds complex, but after seeing it executed, the controls seem to be surprisingly intuitive, and there were a large number of dance moves that could be performed with ease.”
The look of the game is really great. They went for a very unique, kind of cartoon-character-in-full-3D look, if that makes any sense. Karaoke functionality is also mentioned, but it’s never explained where the microphone for this is. Is this something that’s going to snap onto the controller in-between the remote and nunchuk? Hmm. Much is made of the game’s “goal” which seems to be to dance well and record a music video. Sounds fun to me, and I can’t wait to see what it looks and sounds like in motion.
There are screenshots at the linked article. With Boogie expected in 2007, they could be trying to position themselves to eclipse Konami’s DDR Hottest Party. My hope is that they’re both awesome games and I’ll have to get both to support my new rhythm game habit.
