As you may be aware, DirectX 10 is available for Windows Vista only. So what differences will you see running a DirectX 10 game on XP in DirectX9? These examples are from Age of Conan: Hyperborian Adventures.

The consensus seems to be that those DX10 graphics could be done in DX9. One commenter on the EvilAvatar thread says: “Microsoft needs more compelling reasons than a bunch of minor eye candy that could be done easily in DX9 anyway to convince gamers to switch to a new OS that might make a significant portion of their Windows XP games (let alone 95, 98, or 2k) not work.”

So, I’ve got Vista Home Premium installed on my gaming machine right now, and about the only game I’ve played very much on Vista so far is WoW. As of right now, WoW looks worse in Vista than it does in XP. I suppose that could be due to a number of factors such as ATI’s drivers or DX10, but I suspect that things will improve as more revisions are released for my drivers and for DX10.

There are actually a # of reasons why 10 is better than 9. Crysis is a good example of that, but yeah – you can’t run a good looking game without good drivers. My Vista runs soooo slow and it’s a relatively fast box.
