Burnout Dominator A Throwback

burnoutdominatorpsp2_rounded.pngWhat do you do when you have a huge-selling, award-winning franchise that ended up finding its legs in its third iteration?

Do you:
A. Refine the formula and build in new features and game modes, or do you:
B. Bring back some of the things that were in the mediocre-selling iterations.

No-brainer right? You do A! Unless you’re EA working on Burnout Dominator for the PSP and PS2. Then you do B, effectively making it a throwback to the series’ early, unpopular, not-so-hot-selling days.

Gamespy profiled the racing game coming soon to the PSP and PS2 and notes that the game lapses back into being a racer instead of its own type of non-racing-fan-friendly smash-em-up car game. For this reason it might appeal to pre-Burnout 3 fans who mourn the loss of a racing-centric game, but I am not among them. No more traffic checking, no more boost meter resizing from smacking opponents into the scenery, and a focus on actual race driving aren’t what propelled the series to superstardom, but it’s coming back in Dominator.

Oh, and there’s no Crash mode in the game, either.

First Burnout I’ve ever played was Burnout3 and can’t say it’s a big loss that there is no Crash Mode. Crash mode wasn’t something we often played. I’m glad they went back to a previous format because they clearly lost direction when the made BO4, gives me hope for BO5.

That traffic checking was the most terrible thing they ever came up with. It took all the suspense out of a race. Burnout4 is basically Burnout for retards. Just look online, till this day there more people playing BO3 online than BO4. The only thing that sounds not that good about Dominator is that they removed the extra boost you get for a takedown.

I also disagree that BO3 wasn’t a racing game. It was a very intense racing. People who knew the game only crashed or or two times per race without staying on the side of the track. “Perfect lap” was more common than a crash.

Still, I don’t plan on buying Dominator, they forgot the online mode and offline burnout is just meh.

I loved all the burnouts and I’ve had my fill of the most recent so this is welcome for me.

Why shouldn’t EA do so? If it packs right in the sales, they’ve got a load more options to do with upcoming releases. C’mon, EA gets depicted for doing the same thing all over again all the time – but once they don’t, it’s bad as well.

Anyone will tell you that Burnout 3 was the best in the series, which is why they are making Dominator like Burnout 3. The addition of Burnout 1 and 2 elements are just to spice it up a bit. Trust me, this is Burnout 3 all over again and that means gamegasms for all.
