Alien Syndrome set to beat the odds… by working.

old-games.pngSega’s modern update of the Alien Syndrome concept caught my attention as a retro-gamer very quickly, but we’ve seen very little information on how the Wii version is going to function (because it’s also coming to PSP). I really expected them to go the cheap route and use the Wii Remote the way NES games work on the Virtual Console (that is to say: hold it sideways, D-pad to move, shoot with the 1 and 2 buttons.

Nope. They’ve built a control scheme that I’ve actually been wishing for. Well, I didn’t go into such detail in my imagination, but the pointer use is exactly what I was hoping for.

“Shooter fans will be happy to learn that the Wii remote is used to direct the gun of the soldier as she blazes through the various stages. Players simply point in the direction they want her to shoot, tap the A or B button the device, and she will quickly gun down her opponents. There is really no comparison between this new configuration and an analog stick because the precision and speed gained by using the pixel-perfect accuracy of the Wii remote puts it in a class of its own. The controls feel both spectacularly responsive and speedy – two musts for an endeavor of this type.”

Shooter fans? comments/sleepy.gif Who’s that?

Looks like a ton of content and items, and the robot assistant is interesting too. There are images and things at the linked site, but it’s an early build. Apparently the graphics are still really rough and there’s a lot of work still to go before the game ships around May.

If you haven’t already, give “Tanks” on Wii-Play a try. It sounds like it uses a similar control scheme to Alien Syndrome and it works really well. Obviously the pacing of tanks is completely different but I think it gives you an idea of how the mechanic will work.

Didn’t pick up Wii Play, and don’t plan to. I went with Sonic and the Secret Rings instead, and so far, I’m very happy with my choice.
