donkeycountry.pngDonkey Kong Country (Nintendo/SNES), New Adventure Island (Hudson/TG16), Streets of Rage (Sega/GEN), and Legend of Kage (Taito/NES) all hit the Virtual Console today at standard prices for their platforms. This is a handful of good games that could make someone like me forgive the weeks of Baseball and Pinball we saw for a bit there. Legend of Kage, perhaps not so much.

Donkey Kong Country made featured status, or whatever you want to call it, so it appears first on the Virtual Console page in the Shop Channel for easy click-through. Alas, I hated Donkey Kong Country, if for no other reason than its pre-rendered spritey look, but it certainly was a hit and rated pretty well. Streets of Rage is the most interesting title for me, though I really needed to do some research to remind myself what Legend of Kage was..

Since picking up Super Mario Bros yesterday, I won’t have time for any of these games for a little while. Heck, I haven’t even gotten to Toejam and Earl yet, and that was on my most wanted list. I’ve bought other stuff that wasn’t on that list since Toejam and Earl came out. What is wrong with me?

You know what’s wrong with me? Rayman Raving Rabbids.

Yeah, whats up with Legend of Kage. Bunches of sites are talking like it’s some big deal. I hated that damn game. It was right up there with Deadly Towers for my worst NES games of all times. Am I missing something?

As I understand, Legend of Kage was an average game in its day (1985) but years later, it’s got a kind of nostalgia effect over it. Personally, I’m disappointed we haven’t seen any of Taito’s greats yet. Where’s Bust-A-Move for SNES? Where’s Bubble Bobble?

I think you’re correct on Legend of Kage, although I remember it was lots of fun back in the day messing around with its *huge*, floaty jumps. It’s like the game is focusing on the battles of moon ninjas.

Yet (going from memory here) even with them being so large, like in Castlevania, you can’t change direction until you touch ground. That makes it very difficult to avoid projectiles sent towards you until it’s Too Late.

On Donkey Kong Country, it’s interesting you say you didn’t like it, since Kotaku’s reviewer also noted its overrated. I remember liking it, but not LOVING it, because later on the difficulty got obnoxious. Now, with graphics of the sort it featured pre-rendered being generated by consoles on the fly, it is a lot less impressive.
