Where’s the Wii music channel?

Wii Music channel... powered by AppleNow that the Wii News channel is up and running (powered by Associated Press) and the Wii Internet channel (powered by Opera) is running in a beta format until (reportedly) next month, we have to wonder what’s next for Wii channels. Nintendo’s said there are more coming in the future, and the obvious first choice would be a Wii Music channel. And who would be better to be behind it than Apple Computer? Their ubiquitous iPod portable music player and powerful and user-friendly iTunes software have conquered the industry, so there’s no other obvious choice for this service.

Right now, here’s how you play an MP3 on the Wii. You put in on an SD card, plug the SD card into the Wii, create a picture slideshow in the Wii Photo channel, and set that MP3 as the soundtrack. Or, if your game supports it (Excite Truck does), you can go into the options menu in-game and select MP3s to play during the game.

We’d need a version of iTunes to run on Wii. A simplified version, without the disc burning functionality and some of the more intensive features like the album image flip-file view, perhaps. It would likely access the iTunes store, which is where Apple would benefit from the whole thing.

One would need a lot of storage if they planned to make the Wii their music machine. I could see setting up my Wii with some of my music and managing it in a simplified iTunes interface for use in-game. I have my computer right next to my TV, so it’s easier for me to listen to my music library through iTunes on my computer, but if it were in a different room, I could see doing it the Wii Channels way. Anyone else like this idea, or have a specific problem with the concept?

Actually, they should just allow viewing of shared libraries on your network. Similar to how you can see everyone’s shared library on your local network or work network. That would be minimally intensive and easy to make. That way all the storage and necessary organization/processing would be done on the host computer…

Apple would probably not agree to share any music sales revenues with Nintendo, so we won’t be seeing iTunes on the little white box anytime soon.

I like the idea of a wii music channel supported by itunes. I would combine that with Kat’s idea of having network access to your music library. I would also combine that with having virtual network storage in general removing the need for SD cards or even external USB HDDs. However, I doubt we’ll see this even though it would be ideal. I’ll be satisfied if they tie in a firmware update with external HD support. We can at least hope for that.

maybe it will be iTunes, without the shop.. Therefore they will not need to share any music sales revenues..

You can already use the Wii to access music and video stored on a windows machine on your local network. Just google for a piece of software called “PiMP Streamer”.
