Viva Pinata is for girls, Gates says.
A week or so ago Bill Gates was interviewed on the Charlie Rose show and matter-of-factly and I guess accidentally slapped all those hardcore gamers who gave Viva Pinata a try and liked it quite a bit. He said Viva Pinata is for young girls.
Boy does this guy know how to grow the gaming demographic.
Seriously, though, I have to hand it to Rare for making a game that is colorful, attractive, and pretty unique. I had the chance to be a spectator as James and his fiance took a tour of their gardens a couple of weeks ago on their 360 and I definitely appreciated it. CheapyD and Wombat on the CAGcast that mentioned Viva Pinata a few weeks ago called it Super Time Waster 2007. They also called it Garden Animal Sex Simulator 2007, but that’s besides the point. The point is that they said it will probably only be played by the hardcore gamers that hear about it by word of mouth in the online gaming communities, and that’s a shame.
I guess it’s entirely forgivable to see Gates only able to talk about the marketing spin on the game — the thing is tied into a cartoon after all — but it kind of shows that he’s not involved in the status of the various brands Microsoft is trying to create on the Xbox as much as he probably should be.
