Store exclusives suck

chulipds.jpgOkay, not all store exclusives suck. Take for instance, Target’s store exclusives. They get a lot of things, like the new iHome iH3 Colortunes, which are exactly the same as the iHome iH5 except with colors that match the iPod Nano. That is, you can buy what is basically the exact same product elsewhere. (And I know that’s not gaming-related, but it illustrates my point.) And I can even understand store-exclusive preorder items… it’s extra marketing for the store.

But if you want the DS game Settlers, the only place you can pick it up is EBGamestop. That and Chulip. This is not a good trend. They’ve already started to become a monopoly by buying up other gaming chains and running out the mom & pop stores… now they’re getting games you can purchase nowhere else? Ridiculous.

It’s called Amazon. Anything out there is usually on Amazon. Now I don’t know about Settlers because it’s supposedly not available to USA yet. However there is not one title I haven’t found on Amazon that Gamestop has.

Don’t worry anyway, I think Gamestop will be losing money very soon. Their game prices are increasing and they are paying out less. Their sales are falling and far less people are going to gamestop. Most people think, why should I sell this game I just paid $60 for new when they will give me half that and sell it for $54. You’d make a better deal selling your games on ebay.

Plus all of the developers hate Gamestop. I see the industry going legal in the next 5 years to reap profits from Gamestop’s used sales. We’re talking millions of dollars the industry doesn’t get out of their games. It’s part of the reason game costs have gone up. So actually in part we should blame used game sales for the high cost of 360 games.

Exclusive means it will not be on Amazon, at least not initially. If it shows up, it will mean that either 3rd-party sellers are selling them on the marketplace, having bought them from EBGamestop, or else that the publishers have decided to expand the stores allowed to sell it.

It’s even worse for importers from Europe. I’ve been waiting for Chulip for years and now I can’t/won’t buy it because shipping would cost me a lot more than the game itself.
