Still waiting for MSX games on Virtual Console.

nes-retro-pad.pngIt was mentioned at some point not too long ago that we’d see games from the MSX system on the Wii Virtual Console, but none has materialized yet. Information in various places says that Nintendo confirmed this themselves on their Japanese Virtual Console website, a site that I have been unable to find, though the US one, lacking any mention of MSX, is easy enough. A quick primer on the MSX can be found in IGN.com’s Wii FAQ:

The MSX home computer was released in Japan in 1983 and is fondly remembered for some of the popular videogame franchises that were born to life on the system. Franchises including Metal Gear, Dragon Quest, Puyo Puyo, Ys and Wizardry all appeared first on MSX – and they may return again on Wii.

Emulators are available for the platform, and have been for quite a while. I wonder if it’s something Nintendo was planning and then pulled the plug on. At any rate, I’d love to try out the version of Castlevania that was on MSX, as well as the original Dragon Quest. The problem may simply be lack of the original software from that long ago. It’s also safe to assume that even if it does come to Japan, it may never show up in the US, just as the original system did not. Has anyone heard anything lately about the MSX support?

Extrapolating from the fact that the Virtual Console in Australia does not receive the TG-16 games since that console never existed in said country, I think it’s safe to say that the US will never see MSX games in our VC.

Closest you’ll get is the MSX Metal Gear games back on the Snake Eater re-release!

There is a gross inaccuracy in IGN’s information. Wizardry most certainly did NOT originate on the MSX! It first saw the world as an Apple II game.
