Square Enix To Nintendo: Friend Codes? Uh No.

FFXI_Wii_Comic.jpgWith what could possibly shape the future of online gaming on the Wii, Square Enix is trying desperately to convince Nintendo to drop their strict Friend Code regulation. Apparently, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 20th Anniversary project, which will lead to re-releases of classic Final Fantasy titles across multiple platforms, won’t include Final Fantasy XI hitting the Wii.

The problem lies with Friend Codes and if Nintendo doesn’t waive Square Enix’s requirement to include them, it will signal a significant loss for more than just Wii Final Fantasy fans. If Nintendo shows any flexibility on the matter it could cause a flood of similar requests to roll in from other developers. Can their online scheme survive with half the games needing Friend Codes and half not?

I don’t think Nintendo will let this happen, because it would effectively fragment their community even more than their Friend Codes have already accomplished. They’d probably have to drop Friend Codes altogether, which also isn’t going to happen anytime soon.

Friend codes are fine for under 13 year olds. I get it. Protect little billy. But give the rest of us an option. Give developers an option. I hope enough large and respected developers make a stink about this that Nintendo makes some changes. I doubt it will happen though. The average gamer is 30 years old for freaks sake. You’re expanding the market to a huge new adult audience. They simply need to add a feature in the parental controls to replace friend codes with gamer tags and to allow friends requests. It’s that simple really.
