Square Enix Licenses Unreal Engine 3

squareenix_200702.jpgDubiousQuality noticed this news item about Square Enix having licensed the Unreal Engine 3 from Epic for future development efforts. It makes sense to use an established engine for your game if it fits your needs to save on development costs, and it’s really a feather in Epic’s cap to have their engine chosen by Square Enix, a company famous for creating its own beautiful graphics engines for its games.

Square Enix has gone on the record saying they’re going to continue using their in-house-developed White Engine for Final Fantasy XIII, so that game is going to continue development unaffected by this licensing deal.

Bill Harris at DQ brings up an interesting question. Wouldn’t using the Unreal Engine 3 allow them to much more easily port games between all the platforms it runs on? That could mean future Final Fantasy games showing up on the 360 and PC or some combination thereof. Only time will tell.

This is an achilles heel that Nintendo also sports. They build all their own engines. If Geist or Metroid Prime 2 had run on an Unreal engine or something similar they’d have been done in much less time and might even have looked better. Geist might have been a decent game.
