Spore: Game of Games
Will Wright gave a presentation with his team at the DICE 2007 conference about Spore, which is easily one of the most anticipated titles on any platform. It looks like the game’s very big ambitions have caused its scope to continue growing. If Wright wasn’t such a genius, I’d be afraid that this would basically become massive feature creep and would threaten the game’s viability.
But his presentation shows they have a firm grip not just on the broad feature set, also shows that they’re keeping their eye on the ball — the happy fun ball, if you will.
The game is still going to be played in phases, and these phases were shown along with the games they most closely resemble:
Molecular ->> Tetris
Cellular ->> Pac-Man
Creature ->> Diablo / FPS
Tribal ->> Populous
City ->> SimCity
Civilization ->> Civilization / Risk
Terraform ->> SimEarth
Galactic ->> Masters of Orion
That’s a big list, and it’s chock full of great gameplay possibilities. Will they deliver? Towards the end of the presentation it devolved into a veritable wish list of things they still want to do with the game, even to the point that they admit they can’t afford to build everything they want into the game.
I remember when I heard about this game last year and was disappointed in its delay. Now that it’s 2007, a late-2007 launch date with such a big game now seems pretty aggressive. What do you think? Can they do it this year?
