Skype Reference Found In PSP Firmware

skype_logo.jpgOne side effect of the riff-raff decrypting the PSP firmware is that they sometimes notice something unusual within it. PocketGamer’s blog has noticed references to Skype in the 3.10 and later firmware. Could it be that Sony is making good on their promises to work with popular third-party software vendors to extend the PSP even further?

It’s easy to see the value of Skype on a handheld like the PSP, and it would definitely drive sales of Sony’s proprietary headset for the system. I’m not crazy, so I’m not going to wish for Skype support in online games — that kind of horsepower is something only full-fledged computers or perhaps the PS3 could muster.

And that’s the other side of this coin. If it’s coming to the PSP, the PS3 can definitely handle it. I’d be shocked if Sony didn’t ink a deal for both systems. If they make it work easily enough, the PS3 could be a great VOIP platform by itself if it is allowed to make Skype calls to any Skype account, and honor the new Skypeout plans that are available. I don’t see why one wouldn’t be able to use those popular bluetooth earpieces from your cell phone also on the PS3 if you want to make a call.

There are a lot of possibilities for Skype on the PSP and/or PS3. Let’s hope we get to see some of them fulfilled.
