Seven Dead 360′s later, Fanboy Questions Reliability

smashed 360Remember James’ post about the fearful ticking of a clock and his 360? One guy has gone through seven, count’em SEVEN 360′s. He’s got a replacement on the way, a brand new one instead of the refurbs he’d gotten in the past, and he only got that because he was able to beg Peter Moore directly for one with the Mercury News’ help.

He was running a gaming lounge, so four of the six 360′s he got on launch day were in the game center while three were used personally by him, and he says nobody ever spilled anything on them. They were all in clear view of the counter. All six of the units died within a year and a half, along with a seventh that was one of the replacements.

He’s torn, trying to decide on whether or not to sell the 360 and walk away from Microsoft’s big white-and-green console. He and his gamer wife closed the gaming lounge back in November, so they’ll be selling off the other refurb 360′s they got to replace the broken ones:

“We’ll sell the Xbox 360s, the E3 face plate, and everything else. We’ll keep the Zero Hour hoodies because they’re well constructed. I had six machines, and seven (counting one replacement) crapped out. That’s not OK. If I had 100 machines and seven crapped out, that’s OK.”

The sweatshirts no doubt stitched together in third world sweatshops are sturdy enough to keep, but the consoles aren’t good enough to keep around.

In the end he’s decided to spring for a 2-year warranty on the brand new unit he’s getting from Peter Moore because he wants to continue playing Live titles. That Xbox Live — it’s so good it will keep someone who has sat through seven dead systems playing on an eighth one. Until that one breaks too, I guess.
