RPGs still under-represented on Wii Virtual Console.

soldier.pngThe closest thing we’ve got to a real RPG on the Virtual Console is Dungeon Explorer, which is considered, as whoever wrote the Wikipedia article put it, a cross between Zelda and Ikari Warriors.

With all the great RPGs that have been available over the years, like the first six Dragon Quest games, the first six Final Fantasy games, Super Mario RPG, an assortment of Phantasy Star titles, and a bunch of peripheral hits like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana, it’s remarkable that we haven’t seen a single one appear on the Virtual Console yet. I’m just saying. I’d be all over just about any of the Dragon Quest games. I’ve already got remakes of the FF games to keep me company on my DS.

Let’s have a look at the makeup of the VC releases.

There are 56 games currently available for download on the Virtual Console.

Platform: 16, or 28.6%
Shooter: 10, or 17.9%
Fighting: 8, or 14.3%
Sports: 6, or 10.7%
Puzzle: 5, or 8.9%
Racing: 4, or 7.1%
Adventure: 4, or 7.1%
Strategy: 2, or 3.6%
RPG: 1, or 1.8%

Wow. Speaking of Ikari Warriors… with a third of the games on the virtual console being shooters or fighting games, it’s no wonder Rockstar’s bringing Manhunt 2 to the console. Parents, watch out! And again I say, where are the RPGs?

    Good call.

Speaking of virtual console, I’m really looking forward to Dragon Warrior, or whatever it was called in markets other than where I purchased it. :)
I loved that game. How about bringing GBA games like Golden Sun to the VC. That would be pretty nice.

I’m not sure what the deal is with DQ Swords but that could be cool. Maybe if DQIX does well on the DS and the Wii keeps selling we could see a true DQ on the Wii. Or maybe a Baten Kaitos sequel? I heard that one was pretty good but I never did get it. You know what? I’ll think I’ll go find it right now before the stores close!

I’ve heard people suggest that Nintendo is releasing games at such a trickling pace because people are more likely to buy games each week if there aren’t simply hundreds of options sitting on the virtual shelf from day 1. I’m not sure I agree that this makes sense, but by the same logic, one could argue that they may be holding off on RPGs because the high time investment required would mean they might skip out on Xenophobe or whatever shitty action game they’re releasing next week.
