PS3 Video Service Coming “Very Shortly”
Phil Harrison has gone on the record saying that with a hard drive in every PS3 and the PlayStation Store running, a video downloading service is coming “very shortly”. He declines to say exactly when, but it certainly seems like a no-brainer given their own movie portfolio alone. Until it opens, however, it’s just like all of Sony’s other unfulfilled promises.
Content protection has to be foremost in Sony’s mind as they work on this service. With the PS3 being pretty open to outside storage devices like USB hard drives, and with the hard drive itself being easily removed, you have to wonder if pirates won’t buy a single copy of everything on the store, copy it off the drive, crack it, and then upload it everywhere. I imagine the USB kit I’ve seen that let you plug your 360 drive into your PC for transferring Xbox save games back and forth to it could be used for similar purposes.
One other thing to consider is that the PSP could become a movie watching device via WiFi. This is only really worth doing if the PS3 is not busy doing other things, e.g. can a PSP owner watch one video while someone in the living room is watching a DVD, BD, or another video on the device? Of course it would be too much to ask to be able to stream a video to the PSP while someone else is playing a game. If Sony wants to get the whole house interested in using the PS3 to its fullest, the ability to share it would be a very good selling point. They can’t expect everyone to buy their own PS3 can they? They’re having a hard enough time getting people to buy just one of the darned things.
Well I’m glad I came back down to earth. The air was getting thin up there in dreamland where Sony has a clue how to sell their systems. In the meantime I’ll be watching video podcasts and playing great games on my PSP, with the occasional evening enjoying some great PS2 titles.
