Ouendan 2, Panel de Pon DS coming in 2007.
Within the past 24 hours or so, I clearly recall doing two things. Two things, that is, that pertain to this whole gaming blog thing. Well, two things that relate to this post. Directly. Did I mention I failed Introduction to Introductions in college?
I was saying to myself just yesterday that it was about time I pulled out Ouendan and gave it another spin. It’s my favorite game on the DS, you know, one of those “this could only happen on this platform” things. Not even the Wii could have a game quite like this. For the unfamiliar, Ouendan is an import-only rhythm game for the DS whose concept is so far removed from western culture that I won’t even bother going into it here.
Suffice it to say when they brought it over to the US, iNis really built a whole new game, using the same mechanics, so that it would appeal more to the markets it was entering. They called it Elite Beat Agents, and lo, it was also fantastic, but somewhat lacking in that WTF feel the Japanese edition had.
Ouendan still stands as the only game I’ve ever imported. It set me back fifty big ones at Play-Asia, plus shipping. And it’s worth every penny.
The other game I was thinking about was Tetris Attack, which my wife and I had a great time playing when we had a SNES, shortly after we moved in together. I wanted that on the Virtual Console so we could play it some more. Panel de Pon is a puzzle game with sliding tiles. By swapping pairs of tiles using a rectangular cursor, you make lines of three and they disappear. Similar in general concept to many other puzzle games. In the US, we first saw it as Tetris Attack on the SNES. Then it showed up on other Nintendo platforms as Pok?
