I’m Thinking of a Number

time.jpgThis morning, a friend informed me that he needs to send his launch Xbox 360 off for repair. The system is repeatedly locking up on him after a few minutes of any game he attempts to play. Microsoft stated that they

I’ve had three xbox 360s so far due to the fact that I had to send the first two back for repair, in my case for replacement. The hardware is not stable at all and I’m also afraid that it will be a matter of time before my latest 360 starts having problems. My biggest gripe, however, is not being able to play my purchased Live Arcade titles while offline once they send me new hardware. You have to call support and have them credit a newly created silver account with enough MS points to re-purchase the titles that belong to your original gamertag. Of course, you have to cross your fingers and hope you get a support agent who is aware about this issue.

I got my friend a 360 for his wedding, right now he’s on his third. The first one froze up on him and the second wouldn’t eject a disk. I have another friend whose on his 2nd 360. There is definetly a problem with 360′s…hopefully microsoft can fix the problem soon

Surely removing and re-inserting all the cables on a per use basis can only be a bad thing. There’s no way the sockets are designed to be plugged and unplugged that often.

I’d imagine there would be quite serious stress points developed on the sockets where they connect to the main board of the 360, and may well be partially fractured electrical connections on both the power and video connectors.

MAYBE they’re purposely faulty in a sneaky way to boost “consoles shipped” numbers. Maybe Microsoft has only sold like 3 million, but they’ve actually “shipped out” 10 million… think about it.

Oh, no. Now you’ve opened the floodgates. In no time at all this will turn into twenty pages of comments of people bitching about their 360s dieing.

But seriously, hundreds of thousands? Well, my sister just got into a car wreck, and my Mom into another, so must mean that half of all Americans get into a car wreck every day, since thats half my immediate family. On a side note, my 360 has never even temporarily froze, and I’ve had some LONG sessions.

I agree, I think the number is higher than we all know, but hundreds of thousands is a bit much… If it was 100,000 even, that would be a hell of a lot more than would be acceptable if you ask me.

I have to say, all this talk of consoles frying is starting to make me think I should starting calling mine “Icarus”. ;P

Didn’t Microsoft actually admit that the failure rate was unnacceptable? Didn’t they also admit that 3 percent was normal? So if it is unnacceptable and normal is 3 percent, we can assume that it’s MORE than 3 percent. That means that they have had more than 300,000 failed units. I have even heard that it was over 5 percent which would me half a million bad units. Now, 10 percent seems aweful high but who knows. One thing is for sure, the hardware is NOT robust. Maybe its normal or a bit worse, but it’s nothing to be proud of at any rate. At least MS lengthened the warranty on the launch units. That suggests to me that they found a problem that was fixed in later revs of the hardware. It also indicates that they are being responsible about the fact that they know the first run units were shittier than they expected. The thing is, I expect this from MS. Their corporate strategy included releasing products before they are ready.
Look at Vista. It doesn’t even work with MSN games for science sake. Now try to tell me that we aren’t getting beta software. I think the first few million of the 360s that hit store shelves were near final units. Beta hardware. Hopefully when they rev the hardware this year and upgrade the CPU to 65 nm, we’ll see some better reliability. I’ll probably get a new one at that point.

Also, with regard to your buddy that packs the device back into its case after each use? Thats just not a good idea. The above poster is right. He will be putting unnecessary stress on a lot of components and defeating the entire purpose of what he is doing. His unit probably failed because of this.

Mine died three days before Christmas. Am I whining? No way. I love my 360 because of all the great games and the amazing online support. Plus I only had to pay for outbound shipping Aand they replaced it with a brand-spanking-new 360. Seems like good customer support to me.

my 360′s never frozen up on me before, but the included controller squeaks whenever i move the sticks, so go figure.
