God of War II Explodes Out Of The Gate

Kratos Damn I'm GoodProbably the biggest game left for the PS2 explodes out of the gate with a 9.7 from IGN and 5 out of 5 stars from Gamespy. I’m a big fan of the franchise, but even I am surprised that it’s doing this well in reviews.

The Gamespy review even says the graphics rival what’s out for the PlayStation 3 so far. It looks like all that parallel processing know-how has let Sony give the PS2 a fantastic sendoff. But so far what I’m seeing for preorder pricing for this game is irritating me just a bit.

I am a bit miffed that it’s being priced at fifty bucks during preorders. There is supposed to be a second disc in there as well, a behind-the-scenes DVD, so that’s nice to have, but it would be nice if Sony followed their own guidance to publishers and popped it out at forty bucks like they did the first God of War game.

I did see in the IGN review that an arena mode is available to be unlocked in the game BUT you must complete all of the Challenge Of The Gods levels on the hardest difficulty to get it. This is an obscene requirement, and I can already tell you that I couldn’t stand the Challenges in the first game so I severely doubt I’ll try them for very long in the sequel.

See the IGN review and the Gamespy review for details. Amateur talk bubble added by me.

Sony has to use the PS2 to help defray PS3 losses. They know this game will sell just fine at $50 so you can’t really blame them. They are hurting from the PS3 and desperate times require desperate measures. The PS2 on the other hand a profitable platform so they need to exploit that. I think in the long run the strategy is going to hurt them as this could have been a killer app on the PS3, speeding up adoption and helping them keep the numbers necessary to salvage a few lost exclusives. Oh well, you do what you gotta do I guess.
