GI talks Castlevania with Iga. Watch and squint.

staircase.pngThe best thing about GameInformer in my opinion is that they seem to have the same appreciation for the Castlevania franchise as I do. They’ve interviewed Koji Igarashi and even some of the other fine people involved with Castlevania several times now, and I try to catch every interview. This time around, Billy Berghammer interviews Iga, presumably at the Konami event recently where they showed Dracula X Chronicles for PSP.

There’s no transcript on the site (yet?), but you can watch the poorly-lit interview in three parts. They talk a lot about Dracula X Chronicles of course, and the interviewer shows his unfamiliarity with the original Rondo of Blood by asking if anything besides the branching paths was added to the remake (the branching paths were in the original, Iga tells him). Beyond that there’s a whole new stage in the game, and the storyline’s been touched up and a surprise of some kind has been added in.

I liked that he asked why it’s on PSP, because he gets a very practical answer: A remake of Rondo of Blood on something like the DS would not look that different from the original, and as a result could repel recent Castlevania fans who aren’t used to the more straightforward, simpler yet much more challenging presentation. So by bringing it to the PSP, they get the added horsepower to make the game really pop for a more modern audience, attracting them to a game that just looks smokin’ hot.

And we can tell this game does, despite the poor quality video we’ve seen so far.

When asked why he’s said “no Castlevania for Wii”, he says he never said that, only that using motion of the Wii Remote to directly control the whip mechanic would make players very tired, so they need to find a way to control the game that would suit the game’s dynamics properly. Fair enough, I take back what I said about a crisis of imagination. I’d say you’re my favorite again but you never stopped being my favorite, and you know it.

Hey, looking back at that article, it looks like Iga read it before making Dracula X Chronicles. And you know why he’s not putting it on a Gamecube disc too, so I can play it on my Wii? Cause I was mean in that article.
