gameboxes.pngI first heard about Cover Project not too long ago at Nintendo Wii Fanboy. The thrust of the linked article is that the little half-fold paper case that Wii Sports is packed into inside the retail box with the Wii system is inadequate on a few levels. For one, it’s not as pretty as the white DVD cases Wii games are sold in. In addition to that, I don’t like how you’re peeling or cutting a sticker to open the case, and then it won’t stay shut on its own.

What it all boils down to is that Wii Sports doesn’t look nice in your lineup of games. And for those who uh, line up and alphabetize their games and stuff, this is just not going to work. This is where Cover Project comes in. You can download and print images of the box art for many games, across many generations of systems. You’ll find the original art in most cases, and in the case of Wii Sports, someone generated a DVD case sized insert using the game’s artwork in an adjusted layout. This is done with a lot of GBA games on the site, redesigning them to fit in a DS case. DS cases have clips in them to hold GBA cartridges in addition to DS game cards, in case you haven’t seen one.

Not sure how you’d recreate boxes for GB or GBC games since the cartridges don’t fit in DS cases. I think they shipped in cardboard boxes like GBA games do.

Another thing this is great for is situations where your box art is damaged or missing because you bought the game used or lent it to someone who was careless.

I nabbed the Wii Sports insert and the Game Boy Player insert. I’ve got empty cases on order.

That’s weird, here in the UK (where Wii Sports was a pack-in game too) Wii Sports came in a normal DVD sized box and looks like any other Wii game.

Yep, I recall reading about that, Ash. Not really sure why that happened.

I don’t recall where I got it, but I downloaded a .pdf of the wii sports cover art in a DVD size image and slapped that in a black (who has white?) DVD case when I first got it. I like it much better now.

I store all my games in their original cases, but honestly, my entertainment center is full of game cases now. It will hold 40 DVD cases out of site. I wish there were a better way to store your games that you want near your TV. Something smaller tan DVD cases but that were still readible from the spine. Anyone out there have a solution (or know of a good product) to storing games besides in their space consuming DVD cases?

I will always keep all the cases, in a closet or someplace out of the way, but I wish I had a way to safely store the discs near my TV without the original cases.

CD wallets will do the trick. You can even get them branded with the system’s name if you look around. You want to see the spines though… I often wish Nintendo had gone with DS-sized cases for the Wii games. They would fit in there. Of course, they’d need to make the spindle thingy in the middle.
