Factor 5 Pres. on Wii: “Boy, am I disappointed!”

Whatchu.jpgFactor 5 was the first developer to truly push the Gamecube hardware close to launch. Their Rogue Squadron games pushed the Gamecube’s hardware beyond what any other developer was able to accomplish at that time. They have since focused their attention with Sony and most-recently, the PS3.

The President of Factor 5, Julian Eggebrecht, has some harsh words for the Nintendo Wii. He calls out Wii developers citing their work as, “sloppy.” His other comments regarding whether Factor 5 plans on developing for the Wii were startling to me, it seems he has little faith the the viability of third-party content on the console.

“I as a creator would love to do something with the Wii-mote, something wacky, but I also can do that just by hacking into the thing and never making a commercial game with it [laughs].”

I have to agree that nothing on the Wii has that immediate “Wow Factor” for me but I’m obviously not the person Nintendo is focusing on this time around. I think his point about the third party content is spot-on. There’s simply nothing on this system right now or on the horizon from anyone but Nintendo that deserves much attention.

You knew I would, and here I am disagreeing.

Right now, there’s quite a bit of third party software that deserves attention. You need to keep in mind that your tastes are not everyone’s. Trauma Center, Raving Rabbids, and Madden 07 have all rated very well. I can attest to the quality of the first two, the third does not interest me.

Coming up we’re expecting some good titles in a lot of categories, like Sonic, SSX Blur, My Sims, Bust a Move Bash, Tiger Woods 07, and a bunch of “enhanced” ports like Godfather. Crystal Bearers is coming from Square-Enix, and there are bound to be more games announced at TGS.

Then you’ve got all of the games on the Virtual Console. Most people are not going to want most games, but I’d say there’s something on there for everyone right now, including you.

You’ve made it clear that you don’t want a Wii, but you need to remember that games whose demographic you are not within (ie, everything but Tekken, GTA and Metal Gear Solid… ZING!) do appeal to much of the public.

    By the way, happy birthday!

I love Eggebrecht calling first-gen developers for Wii “sloppy” as if nearly everything that was on the 360 and PS3 at launch was not sloppy. It’s only in the past few months that the 360 has been getting real quality software, and it’s been over a year.

This guy’s understandably upset because Factor 5′s software didn’t make much money for them on the Gamecube, and he resents Nintendo’s success so far this generation. If he’d had a Rogue Squadron title on the Wii at launch he’d have made a mint, instead of Ubisoft, and he knows it. Waah, waah. Capitalism is cruel.
