Could 3DO games be next for Virtual Console?

3do.pngMmm, no.

With recent announcements that more systems are being added to Nintendo’s Wii Virtual Console, specifically the MSX and NeoGeo, one wonders what’s next. I immediately thought of the 3DO, and did some research on what’s happened to that company in the aftermath of its 2003 dissolution.

3DO’s software apparently has been bought up by a bunch of different companies, but a lot still belongs to Trip Hawkins of EA. I would imagine that Hawkins’ portion is what would define whether or not the platform were available for Nintendo to offer on the Virtual Console, and seeing EA’s rosy relationship with Nintendo right now, it’s not beyond imagining.

So I looked into the games, and I think I’ve changed my mind. It doesn’t look like there was anything on the 3DO console that wasn’t ported to other systems and improved upon. In addition, it was a CD-ROM based console, which means the games would likely be too big for the Wii’s built-in storage. The system and its games, it seems were as much a failure as we remember it to be. Did you know the system debuted at $700 in 1993? I didn’t.

I would assume 3DO is not going to happen. But I’ll keep itching for the NeoGeo games to appear in the US.

Wait, Trip hasn’t worked for EA in a LONG while. I believe he now runs Digital Chocolate, a mobile games company.

Yep, thanks Pete. It looks like you’re right. Apparently he left EA to form 3DO, and Digital Chocolate was where he went after 3DO’s assets went every which way.

I owned a 3D0 back in the dark ages (it’s still running in my nephew’s museum of “video game systems that were cool before I was born”). I remember playing a game called “Star Control” on it that was a great space combat game.
In addition to the pre-built scenarios, you could also purchase fleets and fight with your selected armadas.
I’m sure it wouldn’t hold up today, but I remember it fondly.
    Port that, WiiBoy.
