Considering replay value in VC games.

checkmate.pngLast night I took down Super Castlevania IV, of SNES fame, on the Virtual Console. It helped that my mind immediately leapt up to remind me that if I jumped off the ledge at the foot of Dracula’s steps I’d land on an invisible platform and could make my way to the left edge of the screen where I could fill up my health and hearts, power up my whip all the way, get a boomerang and give it that III power-up that lets you have three of them on-screen at once. Wild how that stuff just comes back to you. How many years had it been since I was on that screen?

This creates a consideration though for future VC downloads. Yes, I will grab all the Castlevanias they offer that I don’t have already on other systems. But beyond that, maybe it’s best to grab games that do not end, or games with more replay value in terms of “how many points can I score this time through” at least. It’s making me really think hard about where to spend my points in the future as I near the end of Gunstar Heroes. That one at least has multiplayer though. Great multiplayer, I’d say. I’ve been careful so far, only picking up Castlevania IV, Gunstar Heroes, Columns, and Bomberman ’93.

Yes, it’s like any other game, and if you get tired of it you can just erase it, but there’s no reselling or trading these in. For me, that’s kind of a big deal. I can be a packrat on franchise games, but just about anything else, I’ve been known to resell from time to time.

I’ve been contemplating Mario Kart 64, as those games have infinite replay if you have someone to play them with. I need to read up on the game to see how it compares to the others, as I’ve played every other game in that series.

The way I figure it, the VC games cost, on average, about what I spend on lunch every day. As long as I get as much value out of a VC game as I do on a burger and fries, or a bowl of noodles, I feel pretty good about it. Not being able to resell a bowl of noodles never even factors into the value proposition either. My point is that the VC games are really designed to be “consumables”. The bonus here is that if you forget your “noodles” for a while and want them again later, you can redownload them.

Mario Kart 64 often gets blasted in reviews, basically for not being the original. But it’s honestly one of my favourite games of all time. If you have a group of people who you’ll play it with regularly, then multiplayer will last you for years
