Chili Con Carnage Looks Like Fun In The Sun

Chili Con Carnage LogoUbiSoft is set to release Chili Con Carnage — a gunplay heavy, bullet-time-enhanced third person shooter exclusively for the PSP — at the end of February. It looks like a straight-up revenge story where you play as Ram, a young man out to avenge his father, who was killed in Mexico. So far from what I’ve seen the game has a few things going for it, and one possible strike against it.

The shooting action looks good, and the combo system it seems to highlight in the videos looks like fun. The acrobatics in the game makes me think of the new Star Wars game on the PSP I plan to take a look at next week. I also like the art style because it reminds me of Serious Sam, another over-the-top, cartoonish, shooter franchise.

My one concern covers the stereotyping of the Mexican enemies as shown on the game’s website. The videos seem to play up the good things about Mexico — its excellent tourist spots, for example — as a contrast to the gritty underworld you’ll be going up against in the game. This is a good start and with luck the game itself positions the plot in just this way. We don’t need another stereotyping lawsuit in the gaming industry, and UbiSoft will hopefully spend a little time working out just how to spin it in the game itself and the advertising for the game. Nobody likes criminals, so having them opt into the stereotypes themselves as their own individual criminal calling card would be a good way to go, leaving the law-abiding population of Mexico unscathed.

Yeah, I’ve spent a little time thinking about it.
