nearlydeparted.jpgThis list of 20 great freeware adventure games is courtesy of the Indygamer blog. I’ll post the list – click over for the download links.

1. Duty and Beyond – in which your mission is to deliver a pizza (not as simple as it sounds). Features multiple endings. Resembles: Maniac Mansion, The Longest Journey

2. Tie: Reactor 09 and Cedric and the Revolution – Reactor 09 apparently has a bit of mature subject matter and features multiple endings. Cedric and the Revolution is a quest to gather people for a demonstration. Both resemble: Beneath a Steel Sky

3. Spooks – done in grayscale, featuring Mortia, a character who wins a goldfish at a carnival, which prompts her to seek out the meaning of life. Resembles: King’s Quest IV, Grim Fandango

4. Tie: KnightSquire and The Family Treasure – KnightSquire is a remake of an earlier version of the same game, and involves questing to save the king’s daughter. You must switch between the Knight and Squire characters to complete your mission. The Family Treasure is about pirate treasure. Both resemble Discworld, The Secret of Monkey Island.

5. Indiana Jones and the Fountain of Youth – Features more than one path to the ending, and optional arcade sequences. Resembles: The Indiana Jones series by LucasArts (of course)

6. Automation – the story of a guy transporting a droid, who lost said droid, and must recover it.

7. Heartland Deluxe – A bit on the short side with an abrupt ending, but includes cutscenes and a panoramic view. Resembles: Hotel Dusk – Room 215

8. Missing – Warning: Contain scenes of violence, strong language, blood and gore. You are an ex-cop in this game, searching for your missing wife and child. The controls have a learning curve, and game saves are only allowed in your room. It’s reported to be one of those games you can’t stop playing. Resembles: Uninvited, Shadowgate, the Deja Vu series

9.The White Chamber: International Edition – Warning: Contain scenes of violence, strong language, blood and gore. A point-and-click horror adventure. A girl awakens in a strange glowing coffin and must seek answers. Resembles: Silent Hill

10. Nathan’s Second Chance – Nathan has a heart attack and sets out on his final journey. “Welcome to a world where things are a little different to what you’ve come to expect. A world where incompetent eccentrics rule the sky. Where the afterlife is only a telephone call away. And where a disappointed, disillusioned dead man can have another go at his weekend.” Resembles: The Adventures of Willy Beamish (Dynamix)

11. Dungeonman 3 – This one must be played in your browser, and is short with easy puzzles. Humorous.

12. A Cure for the Common Cold – The one game on this list that I’ve already played. It’s a short, two-room adventure, and can you guess from the title what you’re going to do?

13. The Winter Rose – A young lady named Rose sets out to rid the land of the ice dragon and save her father.

14. The Marionette – “In The Marionette, you play as a struggling sculptor named Martin. One evening he finds in his mail a strange white envelope, unmarked except for the number ’1011′ written in the top right corner. Inside is a photograph of a room with ropes hanging from the ceiling. He has barely registered that fact when he is struck unconscious, and later wakes to find himself in completely unfamiliar surroundings, with only a house nearby to offer any hope of help…”

15. Kaptain Brawe: A Brawe New World – Demo only, will be released as freeware in 2007. Kaptain Brawe is an absentminded fellow in the 19th century. No violence. Resembles: Curse of Monkey Island, Broken Sword.

16. Nearly Departed: The Story of a Reluctant Zombie – Demo only, will be released as freeware in 2007. The final version will include voice acting.

17-20 – These games have special editions that are for sale, which include additional features.

17. Tie – Trilby’s Notes and 6 Days A Sacrifice – Trilby’s Notes recounts the story of Trilby, who was trapped inside a manor by a supernatural being. After being trapped for 5 days and committing unthinkable acts (because he was possessed), he escaped as the manor burned down, but is still being haunted… 6 Days A Sacrifice – the final installment in the series, which included 5 Days A Stranger, 7 Days A Skeptic and Trilby’s Notes.

18-20: 1213 Episode 1, 1213 Episode 2, 1213 Episode 3: “A man lies in a darkened cell, consumed by pain and sickness. He does not know where he is. He does not know how he came to be there. He does not even know his own name. All he knows is that he is being tortured by a bizarre, bespectacled man, who addresses him only as a number – Twelve-Thirteen.”
