10 bogus PS3 remarks

Submitted by on February 12, 2007 – 12:00 pm6 Comments

bogus.jpgThe Geekery blog has a post up about some bogus PS3 remarks, ranging from exaggerations to outright falsities. My personal favorites are numbers 6, 5, and 2:

6. It’s Just A Blu-Ray Trojan Horse

Was the PS2 a DVD Trojan horse? Not at all. So why are people making such a big deal over this? So many companies (list here) have put their trust in Blu-Ray, the default PS3 disc media. Not everyone likes these companies, such as Apple, Inc.. People could prefer MS or Linux. Instead of Dell, there’s Acer (haha) and Toshiba. And, more importantly, there’s Sony.

5. The PS3 Burns Too Hot

This isn’t as much of a downright insult as it is frustrating. The PS3 never overheated itself. It never warmed my carpet. All it did was give me the occasional electric shock. My Wii, however, froze (overheated) seven (7) times while I played Splinter Cell: Double Agent. Maybe I just got a bad Wii. Or it could be that the air intake shaft is on the bottom when the console is standing vertically. Not only is it at the bottom, it sits nice and snug IN THE STAND. Wii: 2nd asteroid from the sun.

2. EA Left The PS3

Has EA left ANY console? They put games on any console they can get their grimy little hands on. You are crazy if you think that EA will change that. They supported the Gamecube for quite a while. I guess it’s also worth mentioning that you aren’t allowed to dispose of the dev-kit or sell it, or else Sony will have your ass in a sling faster than you can say, “Gabe Newell’s a dick!”

Hop on over to the post for the rest.

    Whoa…gnarly!

  • Cruds

..What does he mean with the occasional electric shock? He makes it sound like it the most normal thing.

Except the PS3 is ABSOLUTELY a Blu-Ray trojan horse.

Ok, so it’s not JUST a Blu-Ray trojan, none the less it is that as well as a game machine.

The reason the DVD comparison doesn’t make sense is 3 fold.

First, everyone agreed that current CD media didn’t have the capacity devs wanted. DVD was actually necessary for gaming to move forward. This is not the case with Blu-Ray. DVD is still plenty for 95 percent of games.

Second, DVD is not owned by Sony so of course it was not a trojan horse. Sony didn’t stand to make a killing off proprietary DVD media since it was not their standard. Sony didn’t include a DVD drive in order to drive adoption of a standard that would lead to huge licensing profits for them in the future. This is absolutely the case for Blu-Ray.

Third, VHS was in its death throws at the time, (whereas DVD is just now reaching higher-than-VHS install numbers) so to add a DVD player to the PS2 was a great value add to drive customer adoption of the PS2. Sony didn’t use PS2 to sell DVD to consumers. They used DVD to sell the PS2. Unlike today, Sony is doing the opposite. They are not using Blu-Ray to sell the PS3. In fact, it’s raising the price a LOT. Blu-ray and the associated cost increase is PROHIBITING adoption of the PS3. No, they are using the PS3 to sell Blu-Ray. They are using gamers to drive adoption of their format. Very different than what they did with PS2.

So, yeah, PS3 is most definitely a Blu-Ray trojan.
And yes, the PS2 was not a DVD trojan. Using the fact that the PS2 was not a DVD trojan does nothing to support the idea that the PS3 is a Blu-Ray trojan.

All that being said, I’m not claiming that Sony using the PS3 to push their proprietary new media format is a bad thing. Its a business move every company has a right to make. I don’t fault that for it, but lets call a spade a spade.

You realize this blog is by a self-described “7th grader”, right?

Jub, your point is? 7th graders have nothing to say? 7th graders can’t make a good point?

  • Jub

That’s pretty much my point, yes.

As a general rule, 7th graders are quite ignorant in the grand scheme of things.

8th graders on the other hand: Very worldly.
